Protest against Islamic Law of Polygamy for men in Iran |
||||
Last week, about 300 women gathered at the office of the Society of Journalists in Tehran to protest against the anti-women TV programmes shown on Iranian official TV. It all started a couple of months ago when a TV series called “The Other Woman” was broadcast on TV, in which the law of polygamy for men was praised. This angered many people in Iran.According to Islamic Shari’a Law, men can have 4 permanent wives and as many “temporary” ones as they wish. The latter is called “Sigheh”. The film justified this notion and law which rightly faced anger and protests.The protestors issued a resolution in which they declared that any fim or TV programme that propagates humiliation and violence against women should be banned; that legal supervision should be put in place to monitor such programmes and prosecute their producers; and that women organisationsand NGOs be given appropriate air time on the TV channels to reflect theirviews.The protesters were attacked, two were arrested who were later released. This is just one aspect of the growing awarness and struggle of women in Iran against backward religious laws and attitudes.
